Thailand welcomes new king

Thailand’s Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn officially becomes king in a ceremony at Bangkok’s Grand Palace.

His full title — King Maha Vajiralongkorn Bodindradebayavarangkun.

He accepted the throne at the parliament’s invitation and will be crowned at a coronation ceremony next year.

He’s succeeded his late father King Bhumibol Adulyadej who was loved by many Thais.

While they’re still mourning, Bangkok residents, including royal portrait sellers, welcome their new king, who will also be known as Rama the tenth.

“I’m delighted that we have King Rama the tenth. The new king’s portraits are still in process. There hasn’t been many bookings yet because clients like government organizations need approvals first.”

The king has spent most of his adult life abroad and has a home in Germany.

While he’s been the subject of private speculation, Thailand’s strict laws shield him from public criticism.

Events organised by the palace have portrayed him as a devoted father and family man.
